NaPoWriMo Prompt
Last but not least, here’s today’s (optional) prompt. In her poem, “Living with a Painting,” Denise Levertov describes just that. And well, that’s a pretty universal experience, isn’t it? It’s the rare human structure – be it a bedroom, kitchen, dentist’s office, or classroom – that doesn’t have art on its walls, even if it’s only the photos on a calendar. Today, we’d like to challenge you to write your own poem about living with a piece of art.
My Poem
New Breath
I inhale.
Thick, heavy Lucite encloses the scene.
Says I am grounded, unmoved, serene.
Cool, placid facets under my palm
Remind me to rest and be calm.
Whale song as the Humpback pushes
Her firstborn calf to the ocean surface,
I remember that music always instills
My grateful heart with peaceful goodwill.
When I need to refrain from the glorious pain
Of life at its most enigmatic,
I gaze at the whales in their polymer sea,
And exhale.
