NaPoWriMo Prompt
And now for today’s (optional) prompt. Like our villanelle prompt from a week ago, this prompt plays around with song lyrics, but in a very specific context – singing while riding in a car. Take a look at Ellen Bass’s poem, “You’re the Top.” Now, craft your own poem that recounts an experience of driving/riding and singing, incorporating a song lyric.
My Poem
Don’t Stop Me Now
(Performed by Queen)
I’ve always been too embarrassed by my public self.
Like a plated Pangolin I’d rather roll into an armored ball than
Show my true self to the world.
But there are times.
When the car’s interior becomes my drum set,
When my primal heartbeat echoes through a barrage of beats.
Steering wheel
Bass drums kick
Slapped taut
Lap snares snap.
Shifter cap finger tap
Cymbals keeping rhythm.
When I sing for car-bound crowds around me.
When I love the world because the world loves me.
Freddie croons, “I feel alive.”
I agree in perfect pitch and harmony.
He belts, “There’s no stopping me!”
I thrash drumming arms. I bang-nod, “Yes, oh, yes!”
Times when I’m in ecstasy.
“Don’t stop me now!”
